Strimmer injury
She was about five weeks old and only 150g. When she first came in, the open wound had fly eggs in it. After the wound was cleaned, it was stitched by our vet Stan at Magnolia House Vets.
It was important that she could ball up completely. Luckily she was very young and still growing, and the wound was on her side, so when she balled up the skin was not under tension. She was released fit and able to ball up fully after four weeks of recovery.
Pondy
Head wound
He was only 148g, five to six weeks old, and found swimming in a pond.
He had a peck wound and several further wounds on his back, consistent with being picked up by a bird. We think the bird then dropped him in the pond. All his wounds healed very quickly and he was successfully released.
Bod
Infected crater wound under neck
Bod's wound, possibly a bite wound, was infested with maggots and developed into a deep infected hole in his neck. He was an adult hog found out in the day, luckily in time before too much damage was done by the maggots.
He was otherwise a healthy hog and, after daily cleaning and treatment, he healed very well. Left with a little scarring, he was released after six weeks in care.
Vincent
Infected constriction injury
Vincent was found crying in the bushes, trapped with plastic coated wire around his neck. He was cut free, then brought to us to remove the wire, which had embedded into his skin. From the extent of the injury and infection, he must have been trapped for a fair while, struggling to free himself. As the wire embedded deeper, the pain obviously reached the point that made him cry.
He was a lovely hog and very amenable to being treated, made a quick recovery, and was released looking much happier.
Pine
Severe ringworm fungal infection
Pine was only a youngster at 100g and looked like a little Buda. His belly was so big and red raw that he was unable to ball up.
It took a long time, and he endured a lot of treatment with regular baths, but got there in the end.
